A topic to discuss anything and everything related to Data Science, Big Data, etc.
November 18, 2018 at 10:28 am #3520Michael DeVriesKeymasterThe next Big Data Florida meeting is Monday, November 19, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. Tauhida Parveen will be speaking about “How to Become a Data Scientist“:
Would you like to become
a data scientist? It’s one of the hottest professions in the world.
As a data scientist, you’ll be in great demand, earn an excellent
salary, and work on some of the most interesting problems facing
society today. Sounds great! So, what’s the catch?
It’s not easy — but
nothing worthwhile ever is.
Do you need to be good
at math? (Some of it, yes.) Do you need to be a good programmer?
(It helps.) Do you need to be a good communicator? (Absolutely.)
Fortunately, these are all skills you can learn. Come to this
informative talk by Tauhida Parveen to learn about what it really
takes to become a data scientist.Meetings take place in Room 204 (Link Multimedia Room) of the Evans Library on the campus of the Florida
Institute of Technology.See you next Monday!

January 26, 2019 at 9:38 am #3706Michael DeVriesKeymasterOur first Big Data Florida meeting of the new year is Monday, January 28, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. We’ll meet in the usual place: FIT’s Evans Library, Room 204.
Note that this is a different date than previously scheduled. We had some issues with room availability, so we’ve moved our meeting times to the fourth Monday of the month for the entire season (with the exception of November and December, when we’ll meet on the third Monday, due to the holidays). The website has been updated to reflect these changes.
We’re very excited about our Spring 2019 series: we’re focusing on Machine Learning for all four months. By the time the end of April rolls around, you should have a much better understanding of pattern recognition, supervised learning, and current trends in deep learning. You don’t need to be a data scientist to attend — just come ready to explore this exciting new world together.
I’ll be speaking on Monday. We’ll talk about pattern recognition, and use examples to illustrate some of the the challenges inherent in having an algorithm do what we can do without really knowing how we do it. Bring your coding boots — we’ll be wading into some muddy waters.
Stay BIG!

http://www.BigDataFlorida.orgApril 28, 2019 at 9:18 am #3808Michael DeVriesKeymasterA reminder that our series on Machine Learning will wrap up next week with a final presentation on “Deep Learning” on April 29. The meeting starts at 6:00pm at our usual location of FIT’s Evan’s Library in Room 204.
Have you been doing your homework? You were asked to create your own algorithm (set of rules) that can be followed to identify if a color image shows a dog or a cat. To do this, imagine you were explaining these two animals to aliens who have never seen them: how would you teach them to learn what is a dog and what is a cat, based solely on a 2-D pixelated image?
At the next meeting, we’ll talk about neural networks and how they approach the problem.
Stay BIG!

CareerSource Brevard at Groundswell
Oct. 22, 2019 from 6:00pm – 7:30pmCareerSource Brevard is holding a meet-and-greet on “How to Land a Job in IT” at Groundswell, next Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019, from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. The event if free, but you should register.
I will be speaking on “The Internet of Things (IoT)” to begin the evening. This is a topic that we’ve discussed at Big Data Florida before, and something that’s gaining a lot of traction. The introduction of 5G promises to significantly change the IoT landscape.
From the website:
Join us to meet and greet with IT employers and job seekers. You’ll have the opportunity to create an impression that employers will notice and gain first-hand knowledge of what IT employers are looking for. Attending this event will give you the confidence to ace your next job interview. For more information, contact Gary Sulski, I.T. Sector Strategy Program Manager, at gsulski@careersourcebrevard.com.
Hope to see you there!
